Mesh Integration vs Hair Extensions: Which Is Right for Thinning Hair?

If your hair has been feeling thinner lately, you're in good company. Stress, hormones, a new baby, a demanding career, even the Dubai heat and hard water can all take a toll. Most women notice it quietly first: a wider part in the mirror, a ponytail that feels smaller, a little more scalp under the bathroom lights.

The good news is there are beautiful, non-surgical ways to bring that fullness back. The two we're asked about most are hair extensions and mesh integration. They sound similar, but they're designed for different needs. Here's how to tell which one is for you.

What are hair extensions?

Extensions are strands of hair attached to your own hair to add length, volume or both. They work best when your natural hair is reasonably full at the root and you'd like more of it, whether that's extra thickness for everyday or length for a special occasion.

They're a wonderful option for fine hair that needs a boost, but they rely on having enough of your own hair to attach to and to blend over the top.

What is mesh integration?

Mesh integration is designed specifically for thinning areas. An ultra-fine, breathable mesh sits close to the scalp, your own hair is gently pulled through it, and added hair is blended in to match your colour and texture.

Because the mesh creates coverage where hair is sparse, it can give fullness on the top or crown that extensions alone can't achieve. There's no surgery and no glue on the scalp, and your natural hair keeps growing through the mesh.

So which one is right for you?

A simple way to think about it:

  • Your hair is healthy at the root but you want more length or thickness? Extensions are likely your answer.

  • You can see more scalp than you'd like, especially on top? Mesh integration may be the better fit.

  • Not sure? That's completely normal, and exactly what a consultation is for.

Whichever you choose, the most important thing is who fits it. Both should be done by a trained specialist who looks after the health of your natural hair and scalp, not just the finish on the day.
